Turn scattered updates into a clear status brief

theCommons Academy helps you use AI for everyday work and check what it produces. This is free practice — no sign-in required. You'll need access to an AI chat tool you're allowed to use.

Use these text instructions in your approved AI chat tool. Features and results vary. No special integration required for this text exercise.

You bring
A few updates from different people about one project.
You get
A status brief with reported facts, open unknowns, and a separate assessment for you to confirm.

1. The practice material (fictional)

Updates for the spring volunteer drive. Jordan: the flyer is printed and 200 copies are at the front desk. Priya: the sign-up page is live but the confirmation email isn't sending yet. Venue team: no update this week. Sam: we may need more tables, will confirm Friday.

2. The instructions

Use only the updates provided. Write a short status brief with three sections: Reported (facts someone stated, with who said it), Unknown (anything not reported, including silence from a workstream), and Assessment (your read of overall status, labeled as a draft for me to confirm). Do not treat silence as progress. Do not invent dates, percentages or causes. End with the questions I should ask before sending.

Paste into a fresh chat. Only use your own material if you're allowed to share it with that tool.

3. What a checked result looks like

Teaching example — written for illustration, not a recorded product test

  • Reported: Flyer printed, 200 copies at front desk (Jordan). Sign-up page live; confirmation email not sending (Priya). Table count to be confirmed Friday (Sam).
  • Unknown: Venue status — no update this week. Fix date for the confirmation email not stated.
  • Assessment (draft, confirm before sending): On track for outreach; at risk on sign-up confirmations and venue until updates arrive.

Your result will differ. Check it with the questions below.

4. Before you use it

  • ☐ Is every reported line traceable to a named update?
  • ☐ Did the brief treat a missing update as good news?
  • ☐ Do you agree with the assessment — and are you the right person to send it?

AI can sort the updates. The person sending the brief owns the assessment.
